The former milkman shows that age means nothing when 76-year-old Graham Dougherty takes on pacing duties at Toowoomba’s running festival.

Graham Dougherty says he’s “not fast, but made to last”, and can’t wait to lace up his shoes for the Toowoomba Running Festival.

Born in 1950, the 76-year-old is the oldest male member of the Toowoomba Road Runners.

His running experience dates back to his days as a milkman in East Toowoomba.

Mr Dougherty has been involved with the Road Runners for 12 years, and says his biggest piece of advice for budding runners is to just keep at it.

“I just find that consistency is the key,” he said.

“You just, once you stop, you sort of lose it a bit and it’s too hard to get back.”

Having gone through a bypass operation recently, he said running was a key component of his recovery.

“It was really running that got me back into it,” he said.

“I started slow and did this run-walk business and did a lot of exercise and I have stuck with it ever since.

“You can’t sort of say to yourself, ‘I can’t do this’ because, deep down, you can if you stick with it.”

Mr Dougherty is excited to pace the 10k at a speed of 80 minutes, and cheer for everyone along the way.

“I think the running festival is good for the city,” he said.

“You’ve got hills, but you just slow down and walk those. It’s not the Olympics. Just get out and do it.”

There is still time to enter this year’s Running Festival, which will be held on Sunday, May 3.
